COVID News from Singapore. Red highlighting is mine.

Dear ST reader,

With Covid-19 cases on the rise in Singapore, further easing of rules is unlikely to happen for the next two to three weeks, even though 81 per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated. The next few weeks are crucial as the number of cases has doubled twice since Aug 23.

In Singapore, 99.3 per cent of fully vaccinated people who get infected have been mildly sick or asymptomatic. In contrast, among the unvaccinated, 45 out of 1,000 people infected became seriously ill. Should Singapore make Covid-19 jabs compulsory? In her commentary this week, senior health correspondent Salma Khalik says that is the key that can open the lock on the economy and people’s lives sooner.

The rising number of cases has also delayed Singapore’s move towards treating Covid-19 as endemic. When is this likely to happen, and what shape will it take? Experts discussed the issue at a ST webinar this week. It will also be the focus of our Insight section tomorrow.

What is the link between a former Singapore Armed Forces commando and finely detailed miniatures that can move people to tears with their beauty? Deputy Life editor Wong Kim Hoh meets Wilfred Cheah, who was a red beret-donning commando in the SAF for six years, and began creating miniatures after he turned 55 last year. Find out how the artist manages to evoke memories and emotions with what he creates.

Stay safe and take care. Thank you for reading The Straits Times.
