Shirer was making a legitimate point--that events often turn on random occurances--by means of exaggeration and humor. If Hitler had been stuck with a name he didn't like I don't doubt he'd have changed it.

Remember, Hitler was elected by people with socialist sympathies. How far is the socialism of the liberals from these same ideals?

Hitler, like Mussolini, started his political career as a socialist. This is easy to understand: both were "outsiders", not part of the establishment and unlikely to be accepted by it. The establishment frowned on the socialists, to say the very least. In many ways, the socialists of the immediate post-WWI period were like the people today who blame the federal government for everything since the seven plagues of Egypt, and harbor largely paranoid suspicions. Those early socialists had a bit more to worry about: the German and Austrian governments did indeed move very harshly against them.

And so people like Hitler were radicalized. He very quickly changed his political "philosophy" from common-or-garden variety socialism to a form of supremacist thuggery, as did Mussolini. People initially voted for both as a protest against governments they felt did nothing for them.

I DO live in a socialist country, and it's not what you evidently think it is, though of course socialism itself has in many ways changed in recent years.

BUT: Bill Clinton is very much part of the American political establishment. He couldn't be less like a Hitler or a Mussolini.
