Hello Barry,

Welcome back to North America. I spent a month down in Rio back in '99 but didn't get down to Sao Paulo (unless you count the flight back home, which landed for 30 minutes at the Sao Paulo airport). Spent most of my time in Rio and working in Niteroi and went to the Bauernfest in Petropolis which was quite enjoyable.

The folks in Rio constantly made fun of the people in San Paulo (the running theme was that they're always working), but I heard a great joke about the Rio residents that went something like, "Why does the statue of Christ the Redeemer have his hands spread apart? Because he's waiting to start clapping when a carioca does a full day's work."

Seeing Sao Paulo from the air, it sure seemed like a lot of people lived there. Of course, as I remember, NYC isn't a slouch in that department either. I recall walking from Grand Central Station up to Hunter College and being amazed that the (wide) sidewalks were entirely filled with people the entire way there -- and that was just one street!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading more of your posts.

regards,
mark.
