This is not a big surprise... It could change if someday we replace part of Social Security with investments in stock funds where shareholders could pressure fund managers to vote for these proposals.

Exxon, Chevron shareholders soundly reject climate proposals

By Carl Surran, SA News Editor

Shareholders at Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and Chevron (CVX) voted Wednesday to support their companies' views on climate reports and strategies, easily rejecting proposals for reports on methane, greenhouse gas and preparation for oil spills.

According to preliminary results, none of the measures from either company secured more than the 36% support for a proposal to strengthen Exxon's (XOM) methane gas reporting; a similar methane gas request won 51% of votes last year.

Climate activist Follow This had backed resolutions that would have pushed the companies to lower their Scope 3 emissions from the gasoline they sell and other indirect sources, but only 11% of Exxon (XOM) shareholders and 10% of Chevron (CVX) shareholders voted in favor of setting medium-term Scope 3 GHG emission reduction targets.

Exxon (XOM) shareholders soundly defeated a proposed disclosure on a worst-case scenario oil-spill response plan for the company's fast-growing Guyana operations, with only 13% voting for it.
