Twister,
NT 4.0 is indeed a powerful force in the industry, but there were high expectations put in place on that one. The Javastation/NC rollouts next year could change the playing field, and just the uncertainty factor creates a hurdle for the stock performance of MSFT. Throw in the HUGE losses on their media empire ($400 million), and the fact that media companies are valued alot less than software, and you can see how overpriced MSFT is becoming in this buying frenzy.
SUNW just located two properties in CA and MA for expansion of their facilities. Sounds like a company that's gearing up, not scaling down. They have had a consistent steam of earnings, but suffer from perceptions in the marketplace. They don't even talk down the estimates like MSFT does in order to beat them. Something seems askew, but market's are not truly efficient after all.
As for your beloved fund managers from Barron's, and their suppossed prescience: Paul Wick was completely immersed in semi capital equipment stocks early in the year, along with Bay Networks, and we know how Those situation played out. Don't put too much faith in these guys. They're as human as the rest of us and make mistaken assumptions (like estimates of rocketing pc growth). A drop to 15% from 20% last year was the number I heard. That sounds more like the Russian rocket to Mars during stage III...

Good luck,

Peter Shaw
