'A Secret Service agent who guarded Clinton speaks up'

After reading the letter to the president written by Eldon
Griffiths in the Register on Oct.17, I felt compelled to
write a letter expressing my views on Bill Clinton.

I retired from the United States Secret Service as the
agent in charge of protection for the Los Angeles area
immediately after Clinton was elected president in 1992.
The primary reason I retired was because I had become
disenchanted with the egotistical arrogance of the Clinton
staff and because I saw character flaws in Clinton that I
had not seen in the five past presidents I had protected
since 1970. His attention to image and style but lack of
substance and character was evident in private. He was the
ultimate con man.

As we approach the 1996 elections, I find myself amazed
that a majority of the American people still are buying
this con man. Forget Gennifer Flowers, Paula Jones,
Whitewater, Troopergate, Travelgate, lying to avoid the
draft, and all the other improprieties. The accumulation of
files on the American people and allowing "dopers" to work
as White House staff so offend me that I can no longer
remain silent. Where is the ACLU? If this were a Republican
in office, the ACLU would be advocating impeachment for
keeping clandestine files on Americans. They would be
marching on the White House. However, I guess the American
people think it is OK to have dopers running the country.

My intuition in 1992 was right. Bill Clinton lacks
substance and character. I just wish the American people
felt values, substance, and character were important.
