Mark -

Thanks for your response. It certainly seems that Intel has the volume edge on all its competitors. As you point out, with this edge its much easier for them to devote a smaller percentage of their revenues to research and still stay ahead of everybody.

The key point in my argument is the assumption that users are "indifferent" to whichever platform they are on. If Microsoft can achieve this, then from the user's point of view each CPU manufacturer will be producing a "clone" product, ie. one that runs the NT operating system. Current PC users could then switch from their Intel-standard box to any other manufacturer's box, their decision being based solely on performance at a given price. Even though non-Intel manufacturers may have a disadvantage because of their higher expense base per chip produced, if an Intel competitor has a superior product it should be able to take market share from Intel in the long run.

Should this happen, the key point for deciding which CPU manufacturer will win (in the MS-standard arena) will be how fast each of their chips run the NT operating system. More importantly, the monopolistic pricing power which has been split between Intel and Microsoft for so long will shift - moving entirely entirely into Microsoft's court.

How likely is this scenario and what obstacles does Microsoft have to overcome to enable NT to become truly hardware independent from the user's standpoint?
