We had open borders, and few problems with migrants when I was a young lad. That changed suddenly and dramatically with Nixon's war on drugs. Hmm, last I checked there are still illegal drugs around.

The core of most of the worlds problems is unlimited population. I'm agree that those who don't want to bring more children into this world shouldn't be forced. Not only are they unnecessary, but are likely to be ignored, abused, under resourced, and criminal.

It would help the USA a lot if the countries, especially in South America, were not expanding their population. Studies have shown that families that feel secure in their future tend to have fewer children, often to the point where the population can shrink. I'm not sure how to bring security to South America, mostly because it has never been tried. That whole area is treated like some kind of neo-colonial source of raw materials.
