Think I finally found an answer to this problem:

I switched to OPERA as browser, and with a few minor tweaks, e.g., setting the refresh page command to always, I am managing to surf as least as well as my 128 MB SRAM - thank heavens. No more 'done' messages! Doesn't do java in spite of the Java download I selected - i still use Internet Explorer for that.

Also has the ability to page backward very rapidly simply by holding down non-dominate side mouse button( usually right side) and clicking on the left side.
