I tend to think peoples' relationship with money is set relatively early in life and doesn't change much, regardless of their financial circumstances.
People who are not educable have to take the consequences. When they are tired of the consequences, they will learn the intended lesson.

And it should not be made someone else's responsibility to make up for their stubbornness by paying higher taxes because they invest their resources better and acquire more property which trhe state can then tax.
