Peter: I do not see any "killer technology" for silicon right now. In the future, if someone comes up with a stable room temperature superconductor, then you could see serious competition, but right now, the superconductor guys are still stuck around liquid nitrogen. Another potential technology could eveolve from organic compounds, but I think that by that time the learning curve of silicon may already be close to the "atomic" limit, and since organic molecules will always be much larger than silicon spacing, I doubt that may have an impact. Intrinsically, organic molecules systems will also suffer from much greater instability. I would not worry about silicon's future for the next 20 years.
