HPRT costs are generally $10,000 more per procedure than CTSI's this comes from some surgeons who are clinical instructors for CTSI's training centers. I am not sure if CTSi will be flying high in the future but the technique sure will. It is always better to do procedures without bypass with cost, clinical and hospital stay all being major concerns it seems apparent that a less expensive procedure that has similar clinical outcomes will be the future. As far as their "stunning" the heart, I think they use a device to grasp it so that it's beating and movement will not interfere to much.

When a procedure is performed with the CTSI system, non-bypass, a bypass circuit is set up and in the room just in case a problem arises. HPRT system uses bypass all the time, at present, which I am sure will change. They use a scope with a small incision to do all the normal surgical manipulations.

A stopped heart is easier to work with, no question, but it will also potentially open new doors for other problems. I'm going to try top see a CTSI procedure done this week, I've already seen a HPRT valve replacement two months ago. I'll keep you posted.
