Yes all things from milk, diapers, to lambos and homes.... to pay the consumption tax as every exception would be very costly, distort the market. If the tax was 25% to cover gov expenditure (imagine fiscal responsibility!) then the poor would be better off. If they pay 22% federal tax (starts at only $47k) + state, plus state sales tax, hidden taxes (like tariffs etc) then they are ahead.

The US tax code, indeed the Trump tariffs, are a metaphor for what is wrong today.
