There are many countries in the world that state an official religion in their constitution (or somewhere high in the legal food chain). I suspect Germany is one of them. Sometimes (and I am not sure if Germany is one of them, perhaps others can help) there is also an official list of recognized religions. The implication being those are the religions in which the government will recognize whatever special previlages a religious group can claim (e.g. membership in the armed forces or official recognition of rites such as marriage).

My sense is that the West in general but Europe in particular is going to have a very hard time over the next two decades when it comes to religion and social structures. Europe has a very old and rapidly aging population. When they die off, what are Europeans going to do?

In America the problem also exists, but in a different form. If I recall correctly, within 7 years or so, "Whites" are going to be a minority in America. This will bring social changes with it. But because America (and Canada) have been accepting immigrants for a while, chances are that the social changes will be more aligned with the present state of America.

Europe I suspect will be forced to import a lot of people and given their lack of multiculturism, they will suffer a greater shock.

BTW, what you have described has been a much greater war in Turkey. I think a couple of years back the government could send you to jail for wearing headscarves. Also France has been having similar issues.
