I've windsurfed when it is pretty cold but I use the "rule of 100" where I look for water plus air temp to be above 100. To stay safe when that cold, you need a lot of rubber which really restricts mobility. I don't like it so I stick to the rule of 100.

Notice they didn't show them on any large waves.... and the few shots looked like long boards which are easier to catch small waves. ...They might be on slow long boards looking for a few waves and having a blast as they are probably a lot easier to use with that much rubber on. Surprised they didn't have dry suits..

I have friends that surf here all winter with air in the 40s and 50s and water temp the same but with HUGE waves... one gal in my yoga class surfs Mavericks when they crank up...

A few people here surf Lake Tahoe which is just above freezing and the air temp often goes below freezing.

I've skied when it was -40 below in Jackson Hole WY in the 1980s. Anything exposed with hair would freeze but it was fun as long as you kept moving. The only people who looked comfortable wore some sort of skiing wetsuit. Most of us without the proper equipment had to come in every hour to warm up... my breath on my beard would make a frozen mask!

Now that I am older and wiser.... I like to think I look for more comfortable conditions for extreme sports.
