The way I envision this idea is as such:
1. Members who have a favorable opinion of the possibility post.
2. Then, research is done to see what the requirements are for forming a foundation. Items which would require a firm understanding would be things like tax consequences with regard to status, how the foundation would be set up so that all those interested in the idea feel comfortable that the initial monies received to fund the start-up don't end up in the hands of those who would otherwise use the funds for their own purposes (i.e. trustworthiness of those who will have access for fund distribution of causes foundation membership decides worthy).
3. Minimum Donation to become a member of the foundation. The minimum requirement should be such that many will be able to join so as not to give the impression of exclusivity. The "Many hands make light work" theme.
4. Foundation laws for everything from requirements of membership to voting rights to Directors to whatever. Everything gets laid out on the table, and everyone understands it before the foundation is officially set up.
There are many other things to consider I'm sure. For some reason, while optimistic on the possibilities, I'm pessimistic that out of a membership of 100,000+, there aren't 100 people who could trust one another long enough to make it a worth while purpose.
BTW, I have no desire to have any control over the monies, but would love to be a part of something where a membership, regardless of differences, could come together for the single minded purpose of helping another human being or giving to a worth while organization during a sudden crisis.
Would love to be proven wrong.
With Sincere Intentions,
