Adelphia Business Solutions Acquires Over 8,000 Long Haul Route Miles of Dark Fiber, Gains Access to Duct and Dark Fiber in New Markets Throughout The Country
January 12, 2000 03:12 PM COUDERSPORT, Pa., Jan. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Adelphia Business Solutions, Inc. ABIZ (the "Company") has entered into a number of agreements totaling approximately $100 million, giving the company indefeasible-rights- of-use (IRU) to more than 8,000 long haul route miles of fiber optic network and access to many new markets throughout the country. These agreements are an important component of Adelphia's national expansion, and further position the company as a leading integrated communications provider of long distance, local voice, messaging, data and Internet services. The series of agreements include both long haul dark fiber, metro duct and metro dark fiber throughout the country, which the Company will interconnect with its existing fiber optic network. The IRU agreements were entered into with several providers, including:
-- Level 3 Communications - Approximately 3,100 long haul route miles throughout much of the western United States, including routes through California to Las Vegas and north to Seattle and Portland. Also, the Company acquired approximately 750 miles of metro duct from Level 3 in the following central business districts: Chicago, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Los Angeles, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose and Seattle. -- Williams Communications (NYSE: WCG) - More than 4,500 long haul route miles, primarily in the western part of the country connecting Denver; Salt Lake City; Reno, Nev.; Portland, Ore.; Sacramento, Calif.; Fresno, Calif.; Los Angeles; San Diego; Phoenix; Tucson, Ariz.; and El Paso, Texas. These routes, when combined with the Level 3 routes, substantially complete Adelphia's long haul network needs in the western United States and will generally be available for service at the end of calendar 2000. Adelphia acquired additional long haul routes from Williams in the eastern part of the country which will interconnect markets in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Illinois. -- Metromedia Fiber Network (Nasdaq: MFNX) - A flexible arrangement which allows the Company to acquire fiber strand miles across any of Metromedia Fiber Network's North American markets. The Company will use this agreement to obtain quick, efficient access to many key Tier I markets in its national expansion as it continues to develop its own network presence where appropriate. -- Allegheny Communications Connect, Inc., a subsidiary of Allegheny Energy, Inc. (NYSE: AYE) - 600 long haul and metro route miles from western Pennsylvania through West Virginia, and in Maryland and Virginia. These routes will interconnect several Tier II and Tier III cities in the region with the Company's existing long-haul fiber backbone in Pennsylvania and Virginia.
"These agreements are a strategic step in our plan to offer services nationwide," said CEO James Rigas. "Not only do they allow us to quickly and cost-effectively enter many new markets, but we can now begin offering our integrated communications services to businesses coast-to-coast."
The network will allow Adelphia Business Solutions to transport and terminate the vast majority of its customers' long distance and internet traffic on its owned facilities. Furthermore, the network provides the company with the enabling architecture to extend service offerings to include enhanced data applications such as frame relay, ATM and VPNs.
Finally, the network allows several company markets to be served from one switching/central office location, resulting in better capital utilization, and provides the foundation for packet switched IP telephony network architecture in the future.
