MARCH 05 TOTALS:

12 Winners
30 Losers

Average gain per winning trade: 4.4%
Average loss per trade: 2.2%

Total profit/loss ... Down $1540.20.
Percentage profit/loss ... Down 0.7%

Year To Date:

Nasdaq ... down <8.0%>
Russell 2000 ... down <5.5%>
Dow ... down <2.5%>
S&P 500 ... down <2.5%>

The Portfolio ... up 0.7%

Analysis: The stated objective all along has been to outperform the market. Year to date, that objective is being met. The secondary objective has been to be profitable when the markets are down. In other words, I don't want to show a better loss ratio than the market when the market is down, I want to still show a profit.

I am showing a profit year to date while the markets are down but, this is the first month I have shown a loss in the last 5 months since going public with the portfolio. Still, the loss was kept under 1% and did better than the indices.

This month I wanted to try and make the loss per trade smaller than previous months. I did accomplish that goal but it presented me with more losing trades, even though the loss was smaller. I think I need to give the stocks a little more breathing room to try and show a profit.

It was a tough month to trade and I heard this from many other sources as well. So I wasn't the only one to have difficulty. The market would show a profit one day and take it back the next. The only solution to combat that is to close the trades daily or not trade at all. I'll have to monitor that in the coming week.

Highest gainers:

PACT ... up 13.8%
ABLE ... up 9.8%
HANS ... up 7.5%

Worst performers:

HYTM ... down 5.2%
ABLE ... down 5.0%
CC ... down 4.4%

Suggested Improvements:

Since the markets were performing poorly, I'm not going to make any changes. Both long and short positions were being whip-sawed so it wasn't a matter of the strategies needing adjustments. The strategies just have a hard time working if there isn't any follow through in the market. The strategies being used work best when the market is trending either up or down, not sideways.

I may need to shorten the length of time the positions are held but I'm unsure at this point. Since I'm doing better than the market, I may just let everything continue the way they are doing.

Best decision of the month:

The best thing I did was raise cash when I saw I wasn't showing a profit. The tendency is to pick up the trading and try to make up ground. Since the market conditions were so poor, that would have been a mistake. The best move was to raise cash and limit risk. The end result was a minus 0.7% on the month and if one must show a loss, keeping the loss small is one of the objectives we established in the beginning.
