There was a discussion earlier on this thread as to the source of this story and the ship involved. It originally appeared in the Proceedings of the U. S. Naval Institute sometime in the 1960's but no one has dug it up to confirm the ship's name (or whether it was even mentioned)

Another story from the same magazine concerned the young ship's captain who badly botched a maneuver at sea.

To the surprise of all concerned, the flagship signalled "Good"

Ten minutes later a further signal was received "Add to previous message 'God' "
