They were practically all "Deists." This meant they thought God had created the world and left, leaving us to do as we please. That was about as close as you could get to "Atheist" in those days and not have your head handed to you. Tom Paine, who I consider the real "Father of his Country" and real writer of "The Declaration of Independence" wrote "The Rights of Man" while in prison in France during the French Revolution, and was denounced from every pulpit in this country for it.

Abraham Lincoln never made a speech without mentioning God, but he also said, "I never tire of reading Thomas Paine."

I agree with the ACLU on this one. You give the Religious Right an Inch, they take a mile.
