I played varsity tennis in high school during my sophomore and junior year in Daly City, a low income suburb next to SF. My doubles partner and I were a shock as sophomores at how well we played against those with more experience and age.... Anyway, I didn't play singles in my sr. year because I needed to work to pay for college and my doubles partner moved to Cupertino.

I still worked out with the team when I didn't work. Some of us drove down to visit our friend and were shocked at how the area was like dots of housing developments in cities separated by vast farm lands. We joked you had to get on the highway to go anywhere...

I also remember looking out towards SFO from my parents house high on the hill in Daly City. Often the air over SFO was dark and dirty... there were no pollution controls on autos.....

Today the farms in the South Bay have been replaced by housing and San Jose, once only known for low riders and farms to us in the North, is full of high rises and tech companies... yet the air over SFO is clean.

We've packed people into here like sardines but at least the air is cleaner than in the past.
