Welcome to the thread. I have to admit to a lot of self-interest in starting this thread, though.

Besides AMZN and AOL, I am looking at companies like EBAY who have valuations I can't understand with any model. Perhaps people can enlighten us about how to analyze these companies.

Your discounted cash flow model is, in my opinion, the correct long-term valuation model. However, any attempt to apply this on my part runs into the following wall: I don't have a good picture of what AOL will be as it matures. Perhaps we can spend a little time speculating about this based on some numbers I've already received from a poster on the AOL thread (Mary Pugh):
