In the fall of '97 TI announced it was buying AMTX for cash and wanted to close within 30 days, falling within '97 instead of '98, something they called a short closing. Because of the large following on SI they didn't get the requisite tenders and had to go with the long closing. As it turned out, shareholders who wanted to tender in '97 could and the others closed in '98.

Don't under-estimate the power of retail investors.
