When I was a kid my buddy Allan Angel and I came across a can of carbide. We put some down the sink in the washroom at school and lit the acetylene gas. What we didn't know is that some of the carbide went past the trap in the sink into the sewer below the school where it formed a large and very explosive bubble of acetylene gas.

The second time we lit our small flame in the sink there was a pop as the gas in the overflow caught and this was immediately followed by a thunderclap that shook the whole school. I don't remember the name of the kid sitting on the can but the hydraulic force of the exploding gas in the sewer blew him right over the top of the cubicle. It backed up every toilet in the school and blew all the dishes out of the sink in the staff room.

Angel and I made a run for it.

Yes we did get caught ... the kid on the can ratted us out.

If kids did that nowadays there would be court, probation, social workers, terrorist alerts, we just got a good beating from the principal and another one at home.

I haven't messed with carbide since.
