Grasshopper, True, the NZ$ has gone from US$0.55 to US$0.69 in just about a year = + 25%. BUT, in the same time, Globalstar has gone from $12, my GOOFI buying price, to now $42 [and a few months ago $65]. Now that is GOOFIland heaven. Not Iomega stuff, but not bad and they haven't sold anything and won't until 1998.
The NZ$ has got some travelling still to do as we have an interesting election this year which could wind back deregulatory reforms. Tane and Taupo could speak too.
Now your theory on China is not a theory. A friend has made a lot of money from Chinese coming here and buying houses from him. Auckland is crowded with them. NZ is also non-threatening, though even if we tried to be, we would remain non-threatening. We shout at the French a bit, but they ignore us. We hassle the USA too and that got up their nose a bit, but in the end they all seem to follow NZ. NZ being first awake each day its easy to keep ahead.
Unfortunately, NZ is simply too far away from Hong Kong [take a look at a globe to remind yourself just how far away it is: Peking is as far from TBG's house as it is from Brisbane, Australia. Then there is still the Tasman sea to cross, which is wider than the Mississippi. Surprising huh?]. So NZ won't be a capital vacuum and pump into China.
But our eyes are okay apart from focal length at age 47.
