Jeff, this is from a Dow Jones news clip I spotted. It probably provides a better explanation for the price jump.

"PALO ALTO -- Autodesk Inc. (ADSK) shares rose 10% after the company mentioned its new AutoCAD Release 14 product on a conference call late yesterday following the announcement of its third-quarter earnings.

"The software company had not previously discussed its Release 14 product publicly, analysts said. And while Autodesk didn't unveil many details about the new version of its computer-aided design software, it did say the product was in early stage, or alpha, testing and that its completion was expected in the first half of 1997, said Ben Rose, an analyst at Adams Harkness & Hill Inc. "The prospect of the soon-to-be-unveiled software heartened investors," Rose said.

"Autodesk reported third-quarter earnings of 13 cents a share, compared with a year-ago 38 cents and a First Call Inc. estimate of 12 cents. As reported, Soundview Financial Corp. analyst Gary Helmig upgraded the stock's short-term rating to buy and raised his fiscal 1998 earnings estimate......"
