Could be, but by the time I got to high school (early 70's) the whole Durham school situation was in turmoil due to the busing/integration issues. In Gergen's day the there were separate City and County school systems. Because of its segregationist past, the City school system had two high schools, Durham High for whites and Hillside High for blacks. Since the Duke faculty and socioeconomic elites you mention were overwhelmingly in the former group, they were concentrated in Durham High. So its quite plausible to me that DHS had a good academic reputation back then.

With integration, it was necessary to bus a lot of Duke faculty kids to Hillside to achieve racial balance. Regrettably this change weakened DHS without seeming to make HHS any better. Its my understanding that HHS has reverted to being a nearly all black school again. From my occasional visits back home it seems the Durham schools are still very troubled by racial issues.

You must remember when Jesse Helms was just a television talk show personality!

Oh yeah. I used to watch his television editorials as a substitute for aerobic exercise.
