DGT to issue extra 3G cellular service licenses

news.cens.com

Taipei, June 27, 2000 (CENS)--The Directorate General of
Telecommunications (DGT) of the Ministry of Transportation and
Communications announced that it would issue six licenses for
third-generation mobile communications services, one more than originally
planned.

Bandwidth for the additional operator will come from the new capacity to be
released by the state-run Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. after the telecom
carrier switches its analog cellular network system to a digital network based
on code division multiple access (CDMA) technology.

Chunghwa opened the bidding for the CDMA system on June 23. The
system requires only 8.25MHz, freeing up 11.75 MHz that was originally
used up by the analog network. The DGT has requested Chunghwa to
relinquish the spare bandwidth by early 2002 at the latest.

Many telecom operators in Taiwan have urged the DGT to use the extra
bandwidth to accommodate one more cellular operator. The DGT said it has
designated the spectrum for third-generation cellular service providers in
order to encourage Taiwan's shift to the more advanced standard.
