ADC to bring wireless cable to Australia

MINNEAPOLIS, July 10 (Reuters) - Telecommunications equipment provider ADC Telecommunications Inc. (NasdaqNM:ADCT - news) said on Monday it formed an alliance with Austar United Communications Ltd., Australia's largest pay TV operator, to provide two-way wireless cable systems.

Minneapolis-based ADC said it will develop and deploy one of the world's largest MMDS (Microwave Multipoint Distribution System) broadband wireless systems for Austar. MMDS is a way of distributing cable television signals via microwave from a single transmission point to multiple receiving points.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

ADC said it will build two-way transmission facilities that will provide high-speed Internet and telephony services capable of reaching more than 60 Australian towns and cities.

It expects initial deployment of the system in late 2000 with a commercial launch in the first quarter of 2001.

The two-way network will be able to offer subscribers multiple telephony connections providing a competitive alternative to existing voice services, ADC said.

Austar United is 72 percent owned by UnitedGlobalCom Inc.(NasdaqNM:UCOMA - news), the largest broadband communications provider of video, voice and data services outside the United States.

Shares of ADC rose 11/16 to 79-7/16 on Nasdaq in afternoon trade. The stock's year high was 85-2/16 while its year low was 17-3/16.
