The article is very biased. No one said NC's will replace PC's, and it is too early to make any meaningful conclusions at the least. The author tries to be 'objective' by asking rhetorical questions.
It is not like SUN's existence depends on NC's. What's ironic is the proposed NetPC by WINTEL. Analogy: Oracle, IBM.. et al embrace a new car design with 3 wheels; 2 in the rear, one infront. Then comes WINTEL and propose a new car design; 3 wheels, 2 infront, one in rear. If WINTEL is not worried why the NetPC? It is a reaction to NC, IMO.
SUN has alot to offer. It's performance in the last few years speaks for itself. MS's shear size and market share gives it a big advantage. PLease note I'm not bashing MS or INTEL.

Another thing. At work, we have a WHOLE DEPARTMENT of 50+ employees for desktop support, SW/HW upgrades and maintenance. They can't catch up with demand for upgrades and problems. NC's would provide a good solution for end users whose sole use of a computer is 3 or 4 differnet spreadsheets, email, and word processing (75% of our department.) With stnadardised spreadsheets and whatnot for average users written in JAVA, the savings are huge, at least where I work; much slimmer desktop support department, and more productivity for average user.

It is still too early and premature to judge NC's.

on a different note, here's what MS is doing to 'kidnap' JAVA.
