Anything that can't be rationally explained at the time has the potential of being very frightening and it's our nature to search for explanations of unknowns. In time we're usually successful in assigning real-world explanations to these unknowns - at least enough to allay the fear factor.

Were you wanting to inflict some amount of fear you'd probably use what was readily at hand. Were we to find evidence that atom bombs had been dropped on Egypt in Biblical times we'd really have a bunch of worried people running around.

When playing stud poker you'd prefer not to show your high cards face up,
when playing against odds you hope that "coincidences" are in your favor.

A continuing run of "coincidences" will always make one think.
