Hi Tom- The story out of SD yesterday was incredible:
6 die as twister flattens S.D. town
A tornado devastated Spencer, S.D. after dark and without warning, officials said Sunday, killing five women and one man and flattening most of the town. Another 150, roughly half of Spencer's population, were injured. Gov. William Janklow, who described the scene as "like a war zone - like Hiroshima, like Nagasaki," said the death toll stood at six and would probably go no higher. Some residents who were listed as missing "have all been accounted for," he said. Janklow confirmed accounts from survivors who said they had no warning other than the growl of the approaching storm. Two of the women who died lived in a complex for the elderly. One of them was blown out of her second floor room by the storm and her body was found under a library trailer.
Guess I'll stop complaining about our yukky weather. Interesting... in 1989 we had a major earthquake here in No. Calif. Within hours congress was working to provide disaster funds. One congressman from (I think) Nebraska objected saying in essence if you're damn fool enough to live in California where earthquakes are expected, then you deserve what you get. Guess he didn't view weather phenomena like tornados, ice storms, hurricanes, blizzards and floods as comparable. The funds were approved, of course, with I guess at least one dissenting vote.
