This is just speculation on my part, because one can never know what reasoning is behind the "market's" moves, or even if reasoning is involved, but the one part of the price cut news release that surprised me a little bit is the following:

"With volume discounts, this system is priced comparably
to any high-end PC or "Wintel" technology workstation, including the recently announced systems
from Compaq. Now, a Sun(TM) workstation can match any "personal workstation" price for price,
but with the 20 percent better floating-point and 50 percent to 100 percent better graphics
performance needed by workstation users, as well as thousands of technical applications and the
direct sales, service and support required by demanding technical users."

Perhaps Wall Street is not impressed that it takes volume discount pricing to get a system with floating-point performance only 20% better than Wintel at comparable prices?

Another possibility: machinations associated with options expiration.

I should tell you that I rather perversely hope SUNW goes down a bit more, because even though it's my largest position, I'd like to buy some more at bargain prices before the next earnings release.

JMHO. Not intended as investment advice.
