To All: On February 18th, 1995 the Financial Post had an article written by Erik Heinrich [Auto Industry Reporter] entitled, "Alternative Fuel Cars in political tug of War." Here are some excerpts from that article: -Detroit's Big Three Automakers have been developing alternatives to gasoline powered vehicles, including cars and light trucks that run on natural gas, propane, methane, and electricity, since the energy crisis of the early 1970's. [ So can you really fault Alter- native Fuel Systems for taking a few years longer than anticipated to receive their first contract.] -The refueling infrastructure for natural gas is not nearly as well developed. [ Another reason that it has taken longer for A.F.S. to complete contracts. The Countries infrastructure to support natural gas had to be either upgraded or put in place. i.e. Compressor stations, pipeline, etc. Why buy a conversion system if you don't have the refueling stations in place? ] -The next trigger of growth will require strong Government action. [ We are finally starting to see that Governments are getting involved as witnessed recently in Kobe, Japan. ] -Gerald Doucet, president and chief executive of the Canadian Natural Gas Association, estimates Canadians will be driving 300,000 natural gas vehicles by the year 2000 up from the present level of about 32,000 out of a population of 15 million.
