I think the only way to accurately test this would be to have identical trials of each fuel, probably some kind of bench testing.

For example, my husband has a much heavier "foot" on the gas pedal, he rushes around and I know this wastes gas. I have a built-in electronic display of fuel usage, so I know that slower and steadier driving saves gas.

Other variables include the mix of city/highway driving, and engine efficiency. Each engine type has a "sweet spot" where you get the best fuel economy.

Anecdotal evidence doesn't necessarily lead to universal truth.
