Puck, RE: I was reading in one of the Chicago papers over the weekend a lament that Northwestern didn't hire Tommy Amaker and instead chose O'Neill. I didn't know this but apparently Amaker wanted the Northwestern job badly after Ricky Byrdsong was fired. The article said that Northwestern's A.D., a guy named Taylor, already had made up his mind to hire O'Neill, even before they began to review job candidates, based on his reputation as a superb recruiter.

I am highly, highly confident that Tommy turned Northwestern down, not the other way around. The job was offered first to Tommy when he was still an assistant coach at Duke, and Northwestern screwed up big time when they did not treat his wife (Duke grad with a PhD in Psychology) with any respect at all. She had a successful psych practice in Durham, and Northwestern treated her like she was just a second banana to Tommy. Northwestern had no chance after that.
