First of all, the MM system makes the volume double, as first the stock is sold to a MM, then the MM is selling to an investor.

Second, when the trading gets very thin, the MMs often shuffle some blocks of shares between themselves to jack up the volume so that the stock will appear on all computers screening for volume. What's is typical is when you see a large block being traded without affecting the stock price. In order to find the true volume, you must go through all Time&Price lists and make your own analysis of what's real.

In short, don't be surprised if you see the entire float beeing traded a couple of times. This is not NYSE.
