folks, you might find it helpful to refer to the aug issue of value line on tmo and thi. according to vl, thi is having problems because of softening of the analytical instruments mkt mainly. on top of this, they will be stepping up their pace of acquiring companies that will allow them to be well-positioned in the two mkts that they are now aiming for, namely, PROCESS CONTROL and BIO INSTRUMENTATION (LIFE SCIENCES). These mkts are huge (100 billion) and it seems to me it will be awhile before, we (or they) see the rewards. TIMELINESS = 4
As far as TMO, these same reasons are given, along with what TMO announced (in June), that they were "lowering its expected gains recognized from spinouts". TMO also said at the annual shareholder's meeting that they "may look to simplify the company's corporate structure by reducing the number of planned spinouts and by consolidating the various subsidieries that operate in similar businesses" VL goes on to say that "TMO is a solid enterprise. A cash position of 1.8 billion should enable the company to make acquisitions when management finds a good fit. It has also indicated it will use it's cash hords to buy back stock....." TIMELINESS = 3
