CLINTON'S IDEA OF EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING:

Jerry Springer's President Funds Jerry:

Degrading and prurient

Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, Connecticut Democrat, and Sen.
Daniel R. Coats, Indiana Republican, fired off a letter
yesterday to Education Secretary Richard W. Riley, expressing
outrage that the department is using federal funds for the
closed-captioning of "The Jerry Springer Show."
Congress has appropriated money to help pay for such
captions in order to provide "enriched educational and cultural
experiences" for deaf TV viewers.
"If you have seen 'The Jerry Springer Show' recently, we
are confident you will share in our outrage that the federal
government is not only using taxpayer funds to subsidize this
degrading and prurient program at all, but it is also judging it to
be of some educational and cultural value," the senators said.
"The fact is that 'The Jerry Springer Show' ... is the closest
thing to pornography on broadcast television. It regularly
features such perverse subject matter as pregnant strippers,
teen-age prostitutes, and undertaker sex, and characteristically
exploits and revels in the problems of its guests."
The senators asked Mr. Riley to end the program's
taxpayer subsidy.
