CMGI says talks to buy AltaVista ongoing
ANDOVER, Mass., June 28 (Reuters) - Internet venture firm CMGI Inc. (Nasdaq:CMGI - news) said on Monday that talks with Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE:CPQ - news) to purchase a controlling stake in the troubled computer firm's AltaVista search engine were ongoing.

A CMGI spokeswoman confirmed the talks were still being held, but declined further comment.

AltaVista Chief Executive Rodney Schrock told CNBC that ''talks were ongoing hot and heavy over the weekend. We'll know shortly.''

Published reports last week estimated CMGI would pay between $2 billion and $3 billion in stock for a controlling stake in AltaVista and two other Compaq websites.

AltaVista is considered by analysts to be an advanced technology that has been squandered by Compaq and Digital Equipment Corp., which Houston-based Compaq bought last year.

Compaq, the world's largest maker of PCs, has struggled to revamp its distribution strategy and absorb its purchase of Digital.

Shares in CMGI were down 1/4 to $94 at mid-afternoon, while Compaq stock was down 1/8 to 22 1/8.
