Gdichaz,

If you take a digital camera as an example you can make the following analogy. The use chooses the card capacity he/she will need based on the camera resolution. Most high resolution images suitable for 4x6 prints will be about 400-500kb in size. Therefore, a moderate capacity card can hold the equivalent of a 36 exposure roll of film (or more).

If you take very high resolution (minimally compressed images) they could be several MB each, so larger capacity cards are needed.

As the card fills it can be removed and stowed away while a second card is substituted. The card can be removed at any time except when the camera is writing to a file. This will corrupt the data.

For my uses I have not needed more that a single 48 MB card as it holds over 100 resolution in the highest quality format. The card has more than payed for itself given the fact that I have taken several hundred photos and not spent a nickel on film or developing. I post my best photos on a web site or e-mail them directly to family.

When you think about CF costs I like to think of Willie Wonka. The CompactFlash is the digital equivalent of the "everlasting gobstobber". It is, essentially, a one time investment that provides endless enjoyment.
