<< What's g-mail? >>

'G-Mail' = GSM text messages - more than 1 billion sent every month

gsmworld.com

<< smart cards is interesting, but exactly why do you mention it? >>

Article I clipped referenced SIM's (application specific smart card used in every 2g GSM phone and will be used (USIM) in every 3g GSM (ETSI UTRA) phone. 4 million users in US today and 160 million world wide. It is basic component of and part of the security and authentication scheme of GSM. Can't authenticate to a GSM network without it.

Also you mentioned security for another application. Smart Card enables using Public Key Crypto (portable credentials) which is why IBM has the option in ThinkPads and HP same in several laptops. Moving down quickly to smaller devices and up to larger devices. Windows 2000 is highly smart card enabled.

<< ? Do you see this as an offline storage of programs or applets >>

Thats what SIMs do which is what the article was talking about. Java Applets will be downloaded to the SIM in a secure fashion using OTA. Virtually every GSM wireless network operator in US has been using OTA provisioning of SIM using SMS since first commercial launch of Sprint Spectrum in November 1995 (not to be confused with PCS Sprint which launched commercial one year later using CDMA) .

<< as a sort of replacement for a hard drive >>

It will be a while but don't blink. Supplement maybe. As the article said largest rewritable memory today is 32Kb (twice as much as last year) but the Schlumberger individual is talking about many times this memory size in same formfactor. Processors traditionally have been 8-bit. Moving to 16-bit and already available in 32-bit.

<< Is it possible to store enough in this small card to be really useful and functional for the mass user?>>

Already is. Has been for some time. GSM with 160 Million Users worldwide. As more memory and faster processors then more useful. Put Java applets on them and add more utility. Today you store those G-Mails for off line viewing or forwarding, and all your speed dial numbers (portable, device to device), etc. and tomorrow ....

Major tie in between the SIM & WAP which is why you see all the smart card companies as early members of WAP Forum and companies like Gemplus early equity investors in Unwired Planet..
