"Inside the Tangles of AT&T's Web Strategy": Wall Street Journal Friday 13th I have posted my musings (see post: Message 10383807 ) on how the race to wire America with fast Internet access, how the corporate "family" of AT&T Internet, Excite and @Home all play together and how this could effect the Dr. Bean deal with AT&T. The relationships are complex but this WSJ article sheds light on the issues. Bottom line is that there is some fast and furious deal making going on and a lot of contention in the family over which companies software will be used. Any Dr. Bean deal with AT&T for content on the new high speed lines will have to get Excite @Home blessing for the next 3 years. Here is a synopsis: - AT&T chairman Michael Armstrong is presiding over the "family" and pushing the Internet deals - AT&T is spending US $120 billion on cable TV lines access into homes and businesses. - Big phone companies are the AT&T underdog rival with digital subscriber lines (DSL) - AOL/Netscape is waging a campaign for "free access" to AT&T lines for AOL content - Leo Hinderly heads AT&T Internet business and wants to open access to Yahoo and others - Tom Jermoluk CEO/Chairman of Excite @Home disagrees because they have a lock with AT&T on the content until 2002.
