Merge Technologies Announces Agreement With L&H to Enhance Their Healthcare
Software Solutions

Business Editors

MILWAUKEE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1999--

L&H is first vendor to license Merge's new IWeb
healthcare internet application development platform.

Merge Technologies Incorporated (NASDAQ: MRGE) (Merge), a global
leader in communications and information management solutions for
radiology and other healthcare applications, today announced an
agreement with Lernout & Hauspie (NASDAQ: LHSP, EASDAQ: LHSP)
(L&H(TM)), a worldwide market leader in speech and linguistic
technologies, products and services, whereby the companies will
utilize each other's technologies and applications for healthcare
information infrastructure markets.
"With these agreements Lernout & Hauspie becomes the first
licensee for Merge's IWeb, a software development platform that
accelerates healthcare product development while meeting the
objectives of major standardization initiatives," said William
Mortimore, President and CEO of Merge. "This software allows
developers to rapidly develop products consistent with the
`Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise' initiative, taking full
advantage of the HL-7 and DICOM medical standards together with Java
and web information distribution technologies. IWeb joins Merge's
popular suite of medical software integration technologies such as
MergeCOM-3, the world's market leader in commercial DICOM software."
Merge recently obtained the IWeb technology as part of its previously
announced acquisition of Interpra Medical Imaging Network Ltd. of
Toronto, Canada.
The agreements also expand on Interpra's previously announced
agreement to utilize L&H's Voice Xpress and Clinical Reporter
speech-to-text product lines for addressing multi-language and other
speech technology requirements. "L&H's Voice Xpress 4.0 for Medicine,
Specialty Suite Edition, provides Merge's healthcare practitioner
workflow products, such as CaseWorks and ExamWorks with a continuous
speech recognition engine that offers substantially reduced set-up and
`enrollment' time and significantly higher accuracy rates," according
to David Noshay, Vice President for Systems Sales and Marketing of
Merge. "At the same time, Merge will now be able to offer versions of
CaseWorks that address its various world markets in their respective
native languages."
"We are very excited to further enhance our relationship with
Merge Technologies in the healthcare market," said T. Ivan Mimica,
Group Vice President, L&H Healthcare Solutions Group. This agreement
allows both companies to utilize the other's technology to extend each
company's product capabilities for the benefit of our customers.

About IHE

Under the sponsorship of the Radiological Society of North
America (RSNA) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems
Society (HIMSS), the IHE initiative's goal is stimulating the
integration of medical information systems and computer-based medical
devices. The growing complexity and variety of these technologies and
the tendency for them to operate within ever larger healthcare
networks increase both the challenge and the necessity of such
integration. These systems must be able to communicate patient data
dependably to healthcare providers upon demand.
The purpose of the IHE initiative is to provide a visible forum
for encouraging the advancement and convergence of these integration
efforts. The objective of IHE is not to define new standards, but to
foster the use of existing communications standards, such as DICOM and
HL7, while ensuring that they are used in their respective domains in
a coordinated manner. More information on IHE can be found at
rsna.org and
