Chip McVickar: Of course patterns are not 100%, but I only follow those that I have deem good percentage plays. I must point out the shorter the formation the less reliable, but once again that depends on the formation.

Also, formations are often negated a Market turning points, so I always use additional indicators. I have found using formations, trend lines and price action areas very useful for timing entry and exit points.

My take on formations is that they are patterns of investment behavior.
