How it's wired isn't as important where it's wired, and with what.
Your first concern should be, 'what kind of network do I want,' because that's actually what you're asking for.
The standard would be 10/100bT ethernet, and you should have no problem getting cabling done for it.
What you may want to think about is, location location location. All of your cabling needs to go somewhere.
Getting your home wired for high speed access means choosing an access method as well, and that will also limit your location problem. If you decide to get a T1 installed (at around $800 monthly) then your connection will be entering your home at the same point as your regular telephone service enters, which limits where you are going to centralize everything.
Lets say, for instance that all of the connections for everything end up in your garage (very handy indeed), you'll need to have all of your wiring converge in the garage.
From that point, you'll connect your fast connection (xdsl, cable, t1, dialup) to a router (ZyXEL makes a nice 4 port router for dialup connections or umax for cable or dsl type connections, t1 will require a higher end router from 3com or nortel networks, usually a pretty penny)
Anyway, I hope that helps, and sorry about any typing errors, this isn't my keyboard and it sucks to boot.
Good luck with your wired home project.
