Because of the functionality - you get the PBX & FAX capabilities.

Remember that to do voice + data over conventional ISDN you have to split it which means only 64K for the data since you have to leave the other B channel open for voice.

xDSL - allows the full bidirectional PBX access and I'm guess they'll have several other features included as well. Cable modems? Very few actually have phone capabilities, they're just data.

It's obvious you don't understand what the patents are about - they aren't about line connections but the virtual office features of simultaneous Data, PBX and FAX over POTS, a technology that Lucent was going to distribute for Data Race but later tried to copy on their own, same thing that MCK is trying to develop. Sure is a lot of fuss over something that nobody theoretically wants.

Never you mind about the old Austin gang, they're long past history. (or at least most of us thought they were)
