Please enlighten me - which PBX and fax facilities do I need that I can't get via a telco or elsewhere.

That's double the data bandwidth of a BeThere modem.

You lost me here a twisted pair can carry an ordinary voice line and xDSL simultaneously. So can cable. What does any of this have to do with bidirectional PBX access.

Looks like RACE were the only ones making a fuss. If Lucent are copying RACE's ideas as you stated above then RACE's patents must be very weak for them to have circumvented them on the first attempt. You basically got it though - BeThere is a PBX extender with 28k data.
