I have to profess ignorance on SiC. It is interesting that moissanite is SiC and looks similar to diamond.

At $500 for a 2" wafer it isn't cheap but then again an LED doesn't need much real estate. BTW, I used to buy 2" sapphire from Union Carbide for <$100. However, as the post points out, the thermal expansion of sapphire ain't so great compared to GaN.
