A lot of interest is being shown in the area of novel light-emitting devices. Organic LEDs are one example. According to Paul Semenza, a Stanford Resources Inc. analyst: "organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) are among the fastest growing segment of the FPD industry and will mushroom from a mere $3 million this year to an estimated $717 million in 2005". Another interesting area is nitride LEDs and lasers. These devices emit shorter wavelength light than previous LEDs and are useful for data storage, displays, and supplanting incandescent and fluorescent lighting. Most companies involved in these areas are large (e.g. HP, Kodak, Dow, TDK, Uniroyal) however some smaller companies exist as purer plays (e. g. PANL, AXTI, CREE). Companies such as CDT (http://www.cdtltd.co.uk/) and UNIAX(http://www.uniax.com/) may go public at later dates. JF | ||||||||||||
